Our first Reader Spotlight goes to Jennifer Haynes of D.C. She built this pond waterfall using a pre-constructed pond and hand-arranged rock slabs. It's still new and the plants haven't fully taken hold yet, but it is already gorgeous!
![]() | "I started my pond from a very "rough" stage. We bought a house that had a pre-existing pond. The pond though was just a plastic insert with NASTY water and was mostly "sludge" in the bottom. It was so bad that I waited until I knew my neighbors were gone to work before I started cleaning it. It smelled like raw sewage!! After a good power washing, I reinserted the plastic liner. My mother's day gift was a large slab of slate rock! I got to work placing each stone by hand around the plastic insert. I built up the back section with larger rocks and used plastic pond liner in the event I had water overflow. I have a hose that runs from the pump in the water up through the rocks to the top of the "waterfall". My regulator keeps the water pressure under control. My pond is approximately 200 gallons, and my pump is for "up to" 550 gallons. I have been placing plants so that I can shade the water to maintain the algae growth. That is still work in progress.
